The Ultimate Fall Bucket List: Salt Lake City & Holladay Edition
There's a moment every year when Utah tips over into fall — the mornings turn crisp, the light goes gold, and the Wasatch Mountains suddenly feel close enough to touch. Before the snow flies and the holidays take over, here's your list of everything worth doing this season around Salt Lake City and Holladay.
1. Hit the Downtown Farmers Market
No agenda, just a market bag and a Saturday morning. The Downtown Farmers Market is peak fall ritual — local growers, fresh flowers, good bread, live music, and zero plans beyond figuring out dinner based on whatever looks best that day.
When:Saturdays through October 24, 8am–2pm
Where: Pioneer Park, 350 W 300 S, Salt Lake City
Link: slcfarmersmarket.org
Pro tip: Get there early, beat the crowds, and leave the rest of your morning wide open.
2. Chase the Leaves Through the Canyons
Utah's fall color window is short and absolutely worth chasing. One week the mountains are green, the next the aspens are pure gold against a deep blue sky — and then it's gone.
Big Cottonwood Canyon — just 35 minutes from downtown, peak color typically late September into early October. Try the Silver Lake Loop or Lake Blanche trail.
Little Cottonwood Canyon — dramatic color, similar timing to Big Cottonwood, and connects for a longer loop drive.
Millcreek Canyon — closer in, great for a quick weeknight drive.
Park City / Guardsman Pass — extend the drive over toward Heber and Midway for a full afternoon.
Best window: Late September through early October for the Wasatch canyons — it moves fast, so don't wait too long once it starts. See Visit Utah's fall foliage guide for updated conditions.
Pro tip: Roll the windows down, bring a jacket even if it's warm at noon, and stop somewhere you didn't plan to.
3. Have Your First Fire of the Season
You know the night — the one where a fire finally feels right instead of excessive. Add it to the list on purpose this year. Have a s’more for me.
4. Pumpkins on the Porch
A few pumpkins on the front steps do more for a house's fall mood than almost anything else. Simple, cheap, non-negotiable. I love to get mine at Trader Joe’s, and bonus! Holladay now has a TJ’s that I can’t get enough of.
5. Soup Simmering, Windows Open
Pick one evening to cook something slow with the windows cracked. It's the smell that makes a house feel like fall.
6. Take the After-Dinner Neighborhood Walk
Especially if you're anywhere near Holladay's tree-lined streets — this is the season those walks were made for. Mature trees, softer light through the branches, leaves collecting on the sidewalks.
7. Find (or Start) a Fall Tradition
Every neighborhood has one — a harvest festival, a favorite trail every October, a restaurant that hits differently once it's cold out. If you don't have one yet, this is the year to start it. Belonging is built through repetition, not one big outing.
8. Host a No-Overthinking Dinner
Invite people over on a random Sunday. Don't plan the perfect menu. Let the dining room finally earn its keep.
9. Take the Scenic Route Home — On Purpose
Just once this season, don't take the direct way. Let the drive be the point.
10. Spend an Afternoon at Wheeler Historic Farm
Wheeler Farm is one of those places that feels especially good in the fall. Wander the grounds, visit the animals, grab a pumpkin, and take your time. During the fall season, the farm hosts Pumpkin Days with activities for kids, wagon rides, and plenty of pumpkins.
Where: 6351 S 900 E, Murray
Pro tip: Go earlier in the season or on a weekday if you can. And if you're there on a Sunday, check out the Wheeler Farm Market before it wraps up for the season.
11. Go Back to This Is The Place Heritage Park
This Is The Place is one of those Utah spots that can be easy to forget about until you go back and remember how much there is to see. Fall is a great time to wander the historic village, take in the mountain views, and spend a few hours outside.
Where: 2601 E Sunnyside Ave, Salt Lake City
Pro tip: Make an afternoon of it and take a drive through the east bench afterward.
12. Take a Walk Through WitchFest at Gardner Village
Gardner Village goes all in for fall, and I mean that literally. Giant witches, pumpkins, seasonal shopping, food, and plenty of Halloween fun make it an easy tradition for families or a fun afternoon with friends.
Where: Gardner Village, West Jordan
Pro tip: October weekends can get busy, so try a weekday or an earlier visit if you prefer a little more room to wander.
13. Head Up to Snowbird for Oktoberfest
Fall in Little Cottonwood Canyon is reason enough to go, but Snowbird's Oktoberfest gives you another excuse. Food, live music, mountain views, and a ride up the canyon during one of the prettiest times of year? Count me in.
Pro tip: Give yourself plenty of time. The drive is part of the experience, especially when the leaves are changing.
14. Get Lost in a Corn Maze
At some point every fall, you need to fully commit to the seasonal experience. Corn maze, pumpkin patch, warm drink afterward.
Cross E Ranch is a popular option for a bigger fall outing, with pumpkins, a corn maze, and plenty to do for an afternoon.
Pro tip: Wear shoes you don't mind getting a little dirty.
15. Spend a Saturday Fall Boutique Shopping
Pick an area, grab a coffee, and spend the afternoon wandering through local shops.
Fall is the season when all of the boutiques start bringing out the cozy clothes, candles, home décor, and things you absolutely didn't plan on buying but somehow need.
Holladay, Sugar House, 9th & 9th, and Park City's Main Street are all good places to make an afternoon of it.
Pro tip: Don't make a list. The best finds are usually the ones you weren't looking for.
16. Take a Fall Walk at Red Butte Garden
Red Butte Garden is beautiful year-round, but fall deserves more attention. The cooler temperatures make it an easy place to wander, and the foothill views are hard to beat.
Where: 300 Wakara Way, Salt Lake City
Pro tip: Go in the late afternoon and take your time. There's no need to rush this one.
17. Take a Fall Day Trip to Park City
Park City isn't only for ski season. Fall can be one of the best times to go.
Walk Main Street, pop into a few shops, grab lunch, and take the long way home through Guardsman Pass if the leaves are still showing off.
Pro tip: Make a reservation somewhere for lunch or dinner, then leave the rest of the day open.
Final Thought
The seasons here don't wait. Warm evenings disappear fast, the mountain roads change color and then go bare, and before you know it you're back in a heavy coat thinking about the holidays. So work through this list while you can — golden afternoons and familiar places don't stick around long.
I'm Britt Kershner. I believe a home is part of a much bigger picture — the neighborhood you walk, the people you gather with, the places you return to every fall. If you're thinking about what your next chapter looks like in Salt Lake City or Holladay, let's talk. The best decisions usually start with a good conversation.
